These appear to be the same shape as the cup and saucer below. Berthoud does not mention a 4-figure number system as well as the fractional one, but we have to assume both come from the same factory, and that therefore there must have been two numbering systems. Only further discoveries will show how this may have worked.

Pattern 2/331

The shape shown below appears to match a tea cup, Plate 1109 and a coffee cup, Plate 1110 in Berthoud's Compendium of British Cups. He attributes the cups to Hamilton and Moore. They are marked with pattern numbers 2/489 and 2/566 respectively. He states that his attribution is based upon a matching teapot in the then Godden Reference Collection which has impressed mark H & M. c.1845. (Information kindly provided by Janis Rodwell.)
