Many of the earliest wares appear not to have been numbered; later only the major pieces of services were numbered. It appears that not until well into the J&W Ridgway period were the majority of pieces numbered. This makes life a little difficult for the student.

The early sprigged wares are also not numbered, and are rarely marked.

Printed wares without further decoration were never numbered, and the marks used are often anonymous.

Some miscellaneous pieces may be found here.

Initially the patterns were numbered in a single series, presumably beginning at 1. As the patterns multiplied this became less convenient. The following system developed:

1-c.500 All wares c.1802-c.1810
c.501-9999 Dinner, dessert & toilet wares c.1810-c.1850
2/1-2/9999 Tea & breakfast wares* c.1810-c.1850
3/1-c.3/1100 Fancy wares c.1810-c.1856
5/1-c.5/5800 Tea & breakfast wares c.1850-c.1856
6/1-c.6/8200 Dinner, dessert & toilet wares c.1850-c.1856

The above dates are based on those given in 'Ridgway Porcelains' by Geoffrey Godden. The dates indicate when patterns were first introduced and do not relate to the actual year of manufacture of a particular piece. Some patterns vanished very quickly whereas others continued for years, even decades.

No pieces with 1/, 4/, or 7/ series numbers have been noted.
For 8/ series numbering, if there are any pieces, see John Ridgway, Bates, & Co.

*Dessert and other wares do appear with tea ware numbers. Initially I conjectured that, when dinner or dessert services were sold at the same time as tea services and to the same pattern, the combined service acquired the teaware number. However Dr Godden has suggested to me that these pieces might be from extended breakfast services, and I now consider this to be the more likely explanation. However, this practice has caused confusion and pieces have been wrongly attributed as a result. The highest number I have observed where a non-teaware piece, in this case a dinner plate, has been numbered with a teaware pattern is 2/4953.

John Ridgway, Bates & Co

For some reason the pattern numbering system evolved under the previous partnerships was abandoned around 1856 when Bates came on the scene. A new system was begun commencing at 1 for all wares. The series would appear to have reached over 1000 before confusion with the first Ridgway numbering system forced a further change (1859?) as detailed below. For the sake of avoiding confusion, in the Brown-Westhead period pattern books the factory prefixed these numbers with 8/ so BWM '8/103' is the same pattern as JRB '103' however no pieces have been observed by me to have the '8/' actually written on them. A few of the patterns were continued well into the BWM/Cauldon period and appear on shapes of that period.

In 1859, or thereabouts, a totally new system of numbering was evolved based on letter prefixes.

As before, printed patterns (without further decoration) were not given a pattern number but were referred to by the name of the print.

The above dates are based on dates in the surviving pattern books held at the Wedgwood Museum. The dates indicate when patterns were first introduced and do not relate to the actual year of manufacture of a particular piece. Some patterns vanished very quickly whereas others continued for years, even decades.

Cauldon Ltd began a new series of simple numbers without prefix.

I have also included some miscellaneous wares here.
