Here I present patterns from other factories whose wares have been mistaken for, or that have had some interaction with, one of the Ridgway partnerships.

Adams of Hanley

John Adams & Co., Victoria Works, Hanley, 1864-1873
Adams & Bromley, Victoria Works, Hanley, 1873-1886

Not to be confused with the much larger and longer-lived firm of Adams of Tunstall.

The firm used a 'Classical Figures and Divisions' sprigging easily confused with the same decoration on Ridgway and Dudson pieces, though the shapes tend to be different.

Samuel Alcock & Co., Hill Pottery, Burslem, c.1832/3-1859.
Samuel Alcock died in 1848 and the business was carried on by his widow and sons under the same trading title. The firm was declared insolvent in October 1859. It appears that the business was kept going by administrators until the Duke purchase in January 1861.
Sir James Duke & Nephews (James Duke Hill & John Sherriff Hill), Hill Pottery, Burslem, 1861-1864.
The active partner was John Sherriff Hill, and it is his "JSH" monogram that appears on the wares.
Hill Pottery Co. (Ltd.), Burslem, 1864-1867.
In 1867 the pottery was split between a bone china side and an earthenware side.
The bone china side continued under:
Alcock, Diggory & Co., 1867-1870
Bodley & Diggory, 1870-1871
Edward F. Bodley, 1871-1874
E. F. Bodley & Son, 1874-1875
Edwin J. D. Bodley, 1875-1892

Samuel Alcock produced fine bone china as well as earthenwares. His china has often been mistaken for Ridgway because the factory used fractional pattern numbering. The shapes are, however, quite different, and the style of gilding has a flavour unique to the factory. Whereas Ridgway pattern numbers are generally, but not exclusively, painted in iron-red, Alcock numbers can be in iron-red, but more generally are in puce, or in one of the border colours used on the item being numbered. The numbers are also done with varying degrees of boldness, sometimes as neatly as Ridgway, but often much more boldly, and frequently containing a "No." to the left of the lower part of the number.
The Alcock fractional numbering system seems to have been carried on by Duke & Nephews, the Hill Pottery Co., and the Bodleys. In common with Ridgway and other factories the numbering was not entirely sequential but was separated into a tea ware series, a dessert ware series, an earthenware series, and a series for the moulded jugs.
Exactly at what point in the different series Duke & Nephews, HPC, and the Bodleys took over is uncertain, but we know that in the dessert & fancy ware series marked "S. A. & Co." pieces exist with low 4/ series numbers up to c.4/2400. There are pieces on this site numbered 4/2435, 4/2889 and 4/3186 carrying the "JSH" monogram used by Duke & Nephews. Margaret Crumpton successfully linked pattern 4/5690 to Alcock & Diggory, which confines Sir James Duke & Nephews and Hill Pottery to lower 4/ series numbers. Marked E. J. D. Bodley pieces appear on this website from 4/9195 onwards which means all 5/ series numbers are his.
In the tea ware series things are less clear as the numbering goes from 9999 to a 1/ series (independent of the dessert ware 1/ series), then jumps to the beginning of the 6/ series. Curiously the 6/ series appears to have started well before the dessert ware 5/ series which confuses the dating, and early 6/ patterns are undoubtedly by Alcock, with the changeover to Duke occurring somewhere between 6/3000 and 6/5000. A cup of pattern 6/8512 has been spotted with a registration diamond for the Hill Pottery Co. Also a swan-neck tea service of pattern 7/2308 has been seen with a registration diamond for 3 April 1875 for E. F. Bodley & Son. Marked items for E. J. D. Bodley on this site start at 7/2647.
Thanks for correcting dates and numbering of this section must go to Stephen Bressey and Margaret Crumpton.

Coalport china has often been mistaken for Ridgway because the factory used fractional pattern numbering. The fractional numbering, however, never has more than three figures below the line, is usually in gilt, and is often written at right angles to the foot rim.

Dudson Bros., Hanley, 1898-1918
Dudson Bros. Ltd., Hanley, 1918 on

For a long time wares made by the Ridgways at the Bedford Works were thought to have been made by Dudson. There was clearly co-operation between the two factories and it is difficult to establish exactly how far that went. There have, however, been doubts expressed as to whether a factory the size of Hope Street with its two tiny bottle ovens (the large oven was not completed until 1872) could have been capable of manufacturing the wide range of wares attributed to them. Tony Curnock was the first to express the opinion that the ebony wares attributed to Dudson were made by Ridgway at the Bedford Works. These wares share many shapes with the jasper wares. I became convinced of the matter after reading Jewitt's The Ceramic Art of Great Britain (1878). Volume 2 where he describes the products of both the Bedford Works and Dudson's Hope Street Works. Jewitt states that both factories produced moulded ware and mosaic ware, but only the Bedford Works produced jasper ware and jet ware, and he praises both wares with effusive language. Whilst the comment on jet or ebony ware was to be expected after Tony Curnock's article, that on jasper ware was not. All jasper wares were, up to then, thought to have been produced at Hope Street. It now seems clear that Dudson made no jasper ware between the 1830s and March 1882. It appears that, after James Dudson completed the construction of the large bottle oven in 1872, he was looking for additional wares to produce. It is on record that he experimented with simplifying the production of mosaic and jasper wares. The Ridgways must have agreed to allow him to produce some mosaic ware from the mid-1870s and jasper ware from March 1882. Audrey Dudson has admitted that Dudson only started to advertise jasper wares in 1882. Both factories continued in production (presumably with some sort of joint marketing agreement), and the Ridgways seem to have withdrawn from the market around 1891, leaving Dudson in sole production. Only Dudson production will be found listed here. Ridgway manufactured wares will be found in the Bedford Works section.

Pattern 711 trio, Old English Gadrooned shape.
Pattern 843 creamer, London shape.

John Machin, 1830-1831.
Machin & Thomas, 1831-1832.
Machin & Potts, 1833-37.

Machin products have been misidentified as Ridgway by Dr. Godden, particularly the so-called Moustache and Harbold shapes.
The attribution of at least some of the Moustache and Harbold shape patterns is still in dispute, the other main contender being Hicks & Meigh.

The best reference to the Machin wares is Bill Thom & Philip Miller, Machin Porcelains and Earthenwares including a partial reconstruction of the Machin pattern book (Berwick on Tweed, 2008).

New Hall Porcelain Works, Hanley, 1781-1835.

Makers of hard-paste porcelain 1781-c.1812, and bone china c.1812-1835.

Many New Hall pieces are unmarked but extensive research has been done on the patterns, most of which has been published, so an individual pattern number can often be traced.

New Hall jugs and mugs have been mistaken for early Ridgway sprigged wares. They do have a certain similarity, but the handle form is quite different, and distinctive.

John Yates [the elder], Shelton, c.1770-95/6.
John [the younger] and William Yates, 1795/6-1808 (or c.1813?).
John Yates, Shelton, 1808 (or c.1813?)-1828.
Members of the Yates family, 1828-c.1834/5.
Yates & May, Shelton, c.1834/5-c.1843?

Clearly some research needs to be done into the history of the firm as different authorities disagree on dates.
Yates had a fractional numbering system, and did number their pieces in a very similar way to Cauldon Place. The shapes and the style of decoration are, however, quite different. An expert has informed me that the gold upper bar to the handle is a typical Yates feature.
