Machin
Moustache shape

The attribution of at least some of the Moustache shape patterns is still in dispute, the other main contender being Hicks & Meigh.

The best reference to the Machin wares is Bill Thom & Philip Miller, Machin Porcelains and Earthenwares including a partial reconstruction of the Machin pattern book (Berwick on Tweed, 2008).

Pattern 611, 690, or 692

Moustache shape patterns 611, 690, and 692 appear identical which implies they were made by three different factories. As this comport is not numbered it is impossible to say for certain to which pattern it belongs.

Pattern 660

Thom & Miller illustrate this pattern on pp.94-95 but do not include it in their reconstructed pattern book.
This is one of the patterns that may be attributable to Hicks & Meigh, but so far this cannot be confirmed.

Pattern 663

Thom & Miller in Machin Porcelains & Earthenwares refers to Moustache shape Pattern 663 as being 'attributed to Machin'. The shoulder mouldings each side of the handle are, however, quite different to that of the Pattern 325 dish that is definitely by Machin (Thom & Miller p.93), and rather match that of Pattern 911 dish illustrated in Godden, Ridgway Porcelains, p.83. There are, therefore, questions concerning the attribution to Machin. It does not match the moulds known to be by Folch either, so a third factory may well be involved. Both Margaret Ironside (NCS Newsletter 100, p.31) and Austin Wragg (NCS Newsletter 168, pp.36-38) attribute at least some of the Moustache shape production to Hicks & Meigh. This is not fully proven and so Pattern 663 remains here.

Pattern 690

Thom & Miller refer to Moustache shape Pattern 690 as being 'possibly Machin'.

Pattern 691

Thom & Miller list Pattern 691 as 'possibly Machin' but seem to have a misprint in the reconstructed pattern book where the same plate that was listed as Pattern 691 earlier is there listed as Pattern 702.

The dessert plate is 190mm in diameter. Bone china.

Pattern 848 is not listed by Thom & Miller, but it appears to be a version of Pattern 690 with salmon contrasts instead of cream. Thom & Miller refer to Moustache shape Pattern 690 as being 'possibly Machin'.
