'Sylvan' ~ Cane ware

Caneware is not an ideal body for butter dishes. The butter tends to soak into it, and this dish still has the scent of rancid butter about it after no doubt decades of disuse. To prevent this a glazed earthenware liner has been provided. The body is also soft and prone to chipping, to which both stand and cover bear witness. Altogether a remarkable survival.

The registration diamond is blurred, but would appear to be for 16 Feb 1849, parcel 11, which is the same as the 'Sylvan' jugs.

John Barleycorn ~ Off-white parian

This is unmarked but so close in its match to the acknowledged John Barleycorn jug that it must belong to the factory, which made a whole series of butter dishes, many, but not all, matching jug styles. Surprisingly the butter dish does not have the registration diamond for 18 April 1856 that appears on the jugs.

The distinctly off-white colour of the body does not really work in its favour. It is almost as if they tried for a white parian but didn't quite make it. The result is rather funereal. The body is not the same as used on their parian 'Sylvan' jug. Inside full glaze, outside smear glaze. Off-white porcelainised body.
