Cauldon Place Works
'Unhandled', 'Bute', and 'Grecian' shape
tea and breakfast wares
Page 4

In view of the fact that the early patterns related only to style of decoration and not shape, or colour, or even whether a service was hand-painted or bat-printed, it seems sensible to combine the three shapes on one page. 'Unhandled' and 'Bute' shape saucers are identical.

Geoffrey Godden published a number of photos of these shapes in Ridgway Porcelains (1985) as follows:
Pattern 388, Porringer shape breakfast cup & saucer, p.30, Plate 23.
Pattern 399, New Oval teapot, creamer, & sugar box, p.31, Plates 24 & 25.
Pattern 426 (bat printed), New Oval creamer & sugar box; 'Bute' cup, saucer, & cans, p.33, Plates 26 & 27.
Pattern 426 (painted en grisaille), early London creamer & sugar box; 'Bute' cup & saucer, p.34, Plates 28 & 29
Pattern 487, 'Bute' cup, 'Grecian' cup & early London teapot, p.2, Colour Plate 1.
Pattern 487, 'Bute' cup, can, & saucer, p.30, Plate 22.
Pattern 487, early London teapot, creamer, & sugar box; 'Grecian' large saucer dish, tea cup & saucer, p.67, Plate 64.
Pattern 487, 'Grecian' tea cup & saucer, p.68, Plate 65.
Pattern 2/36, small round teapot, p.38, Plate 34.
Pattern 2/177, London teapot stand, p.89, Plate 93.
Pattern 2/181, early London teapot, sugar box, creamer; 'Grecian' slop bowl, pp.87-8, Plates 89 to 92.
Pattern 2/614, late London teapot & sugar box, p.90, Plates 94 & 95.

Pattern 2/643 (brown vase)

This is another example of a pattern to be found in at least two colours. For the blue vase version click here.

For some peculiar reason all the pieces illustrated of this pattern seem to be on bought in blanks. The print, enamelling, and pattern number are absolutely right so the decoration was done at Cauldon Place. For examples of factory made cups and saucers see Pattern 2/676 below. For a factory made muffin of the same size see Pattern 2/818. Only the muffin is numbered.

Pattern 2/1272

This shape of oblong gadrooned teapot, sugar box, and creamer appears to have replaced the late-style 'Grecian' shape ones (See 2/406 and 2/615 above), at some point, for sale with 'Grecian' shape cups and saucers. The print on one side of the sugar box also appears on the 2/1489 coffee pot below. The cup appears to be a bought in blank similar to that used on 2/713 above.

Pattern 2/1350

I wondered where to post this since I only have the muffin of this pattern and this shape of muffin was used in conjunction with a number of early cup shapes. In the end I decided to post it here as it is the same shape and size as the muffin of pattern 2/1489 below and the print belongs to the same print set.

For patterns with the same print set see Unknown Pattern 2, 2/1489 below, and 2/1623.

Coffee pot. Gadrooned edge shape. Bone china.
This does not really belong on this page but is included for the sake of completeness. Coffee pots were not made in all shapes as they were not requested by many customers. This shape was probably used in this instance as is most nearly matched the gadrooned oblong teapots &c. used with 'Grecian' shape cups at this stage.
