Cauldon Place Works
'Unhandled', 'Bute', and 'Grecian' shape
tea and breakfast wares
Page 2

In view of the fact that the early patterns related only to style of decoration and not shape, or colour, or even whether a service was hand-painted or bat-printed, it seems sensible to combine the three shapes on one page. 'Unhandled' and 'Bute' shape saucers are identical.

Geoffrey Godden published a number of photos of these shapes in Ridgway Porcelains (1985) as follows:
Pattern 388, Porringer shape breakfast cup & saucer, p.30, Plate 23.
Pattern 399, New Oval teapot, creamer, & sugar box, p.31, Plates 24 & 25.
Pattern 426 (bat printed), New Oval creamer & sugar box; 'Bute' cup, saucer, & cans, p.33, Plates 26 & 27.
Pattern 426 (painted en grisaille), early London creamer & sugar box; 'Bute' cup & saucer, p.34, Plates 28 & 29
Pattern 487, 'Bute' cup, 'Grecian' cup & early London teapot, p.2, Colour Plate 1.
Pattern 487, 'Bute' cup, can, & saucer, p.30, Plate 22.
Pattern 487, early London teapot, creamer, & sugar box; 'Grecian' large saucer dish, tea cup & saucer, p.67, Plate 64.
Pattern 487, 'Grecian' tea cup & saucer, p.68, Plate 65.
Pattern 2/36, small round teapot, p.38, Plate 34.
Pattern 2/177, London teapot stand, p.89, Plate 93.
Pattern 2/181, early London teapot, sugar box, creamer; 'Grecian' slop bowl, pp.87-8, Plates 89 to 92.
Pattern 2/614, late London teapot & sugar box, p.90, Plates 94 & 95.

Pattern 487

There would appear to be at least two different colour versions of this pattern. First with pink rosettes between the tablets of the design and a salmon ground, as shown below, and, second, with green rosettes and a straw ground.
G. A. Godden, Ridgway Porcelains (Woodbridge, 1985), p.2, Colour Plate 1, shows a 'Bute' cup with pink rosettes, and a 'Grecian' teapot and tea cup with green rosettes.

Whether this is a mismatched pair put together by a dealer, or whether the original purchaser ordered the service this way is far from certain.

It has been suggested the central plant is a stylised oak sprig with acorn. A coffee pod has also been suggested, but the stem seems too fragile for that.
