"Manners Makyth Man" was the motto of William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, who founded New College, Oxford and Winchester College, and both of those institutions use his arms and motto. Curiously the arms in the centre of the plate that carries the motto are surmounted by a bishop's mitre, but the arms shown are not those of William of Wykeham.

The pattern name is unusual. The only reference I can find to anywhere or anyone of that name is the Franco-Russian pianist Marie Panthès, but she did not become sufficiently famous until c.1897, which appears to be too late for the pattern as there is no "Ltd." after "G.L.A.& Bros." (starts 1884), or "ENGLAND" in the mark (starts 1891). We cannot, however, be certain how well the factory kept their marks up to date. I would be grateful to learn of another possible reference.

Pattern 3/1493

The pattern description book entry for 3/1493 reads:
'Table: Silver Shape E[arthen]ware. Print: Mulberry & flown, blue'd on biscuit, plain edge. As 3/1492 but not gilt at all, but finish'd in O[paque] Orange throughout.'
The entry for 3/1492 refers back to 3/1457, which in turn refers back to 3/1110.
The print is named elsewhere in the pattern description books as 'Chinese Jar'.

The meat dish is 335mm long and 275mm wide. Earthenware.

This Royal Arms mark was introduced in the Ridgway, Morley, Wear, & Co. period and continued to be used until the early days of the Ashworth period. The absence of the words 'IRONSTONE CHINA' indicates this is an earthenware body.

The "Pheasant" print was a reintroduction of the 'Hicks No.2' print by Ridgway & Morley. This appears to be a further development of the print by Francis Morley & Co.

Pattern 14465

This pattern number came as a surprise as I had always assumed the the pattern number series started by Hicks & Meigh stopped at 9999, and then the B/xxxx series started.

The centrepiece is 300mm wide across handles, and 140mm high. Earthenware.

This mark appears to have been reserved by Ashworth's for patterns using Mason's prints on Mason's shapes. "NANGPO" is the print name. The impressed mark reads "ASHWORTH / REAL / IRONSTONE / CHINA" and occurs on most ironstone bodied wares of this period. The addition of an impressed crown is unusual. The impressed "G" is probably a blank-maker's tally mark.

The marks are, unfortunately a little blurred. The lower retailer's mark reads: "MANUFACTURED FOR / J. J. ALLEN LTD. / BOURNEMOUTH".
J. J. Allen started business in 1860 and became a limited company in 1899. They expanded into a group of stores which were taken over by House of Fraser in 1969.
This pattern belongs to the earliest years of the twentieth century.

The print bears a strong resemblance to that used for the early bone china Pattern 46.
