I have grave reservations in attributing these John & William Ridgway patterns to the Bell Works. For my reasons see here.

The vast majority of the so-called Bell Works Ridgway products have the lozenge applied mark, a few have no mark as in this case, and fewer still are impressed marked "Ridgway". It has been suggested that the impressed marked ones are the oldest, the unmarked next oldest, and the lozenge marked the latest. I would agree in so far as the impressed marked pieces are older than the lozenge marked ones. There is no way of telling, however, whether the unmarked ones are the same age as the impressed marks ones, or more recent, as it was always possible for a few pieces to escape marking through negligence or accident.

The 8 inch covered filter jug is 190mm tall, 195mm lip to handle, and 137mm broad.

Bulbous hexagonal jug ~ Greenish-grey

Although this jug has no marks it is identical in shape to the Broad St Works 223 jug below. The body used is one associated with the Church Works, so the jug is included here.

The 8 inch covered filter jug is 184mm tall, 172mm lip to handle, and 133mm broad. Greenish-grey coloured earthenware.

This jug has an ingenious method for keeping the lid on whilst pouring. The lid drops by gravity into two slots either side of the lip, and those and a knob on the handle hold the lid in place.

The tiny numerals "9" and "4" are not of the font used to size mark the jugs and are more likely to be tally marks. They bear no relation to the size of the jug.

I have difficulty dating this jug. It is the same shape as the 223 jug below, therefore should be early 1830s, but the body colour used is one associated with the Ridgway & Abington period.

The handle has been broken and badly restored. The white paint used to hide the repair has turned cream with age and started to chip away.
